Lebanon: Hariri's son takes on political mantle
April 20, 2005BEIRUT –– The family of Lebanon's slain former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri said on Wednesday his son, Saad, would take on his political mantle, confirming the clan's influence will extend beyond his father's death. "Saad Rafik al-Hariri assumes the historic responsibility and leadership of all national and political affairs," the Hariri family said in a statement. It did not say whether Saad, 37, would contest general elections due in May, but family insiders expected him to run. "Success is almost guaranteed. There's a very strong pro-Hariri feeling," political analyst Sami Baroudi said. Hariri was prime minister for most of the past 12 years. His killing triggered Lebanon's worst political crisis since the civil war and boosted popular support for Lebanese opposition calling for an end to Syrian dominance of their country. Many blamed Damascus for the death of Hariri, who rebuilt Beirut from the rubble of the civil war. Syria has denied involvement. Hariri's parliamentary bloc said it would back Saad, who is married with two sons. "We will all rally around Sheikh Saad in continuing the path of the martyr Rafik al-Hariri," said MP Atef Majdalani, a member of the late prime minister's bloc. Hariri, a Sunni Muslim self-made billionaire, always said he did not want his family to become a political dynasty alongside the clans which have traditionally dominated Lebanon's sectarian politics. But his sudden death in February prompted some of Hariri's followers to call on his sons to take over the political and charitable work of their father. Some had wanted his eldest son, Bahaa, to take the reins. But Saudi Arabia advised his sons to steer clear of politics after the killing of their father, who held Saudi citizenship, family insiders say. Hariri's sister, Bahia, a member of parliament, became the political voice of the family and rallied hundreds of thousands of Lebanese around her calls for national unity in the face of the political crisis triggered by the assassination. While popular sympathy over Hariri's death and the family's wealth will secure Saad's success in the coming elections, it does not mean he will automatically follow his father to the post of prime minister. "He has to show he has a good record in office, that he can work with people from different religious groups and that he has contacts outside the country," Baroudi said. The family statement also said Hariri's widow, Nazik, would take over his charitable foundations, which paid for the education of thousands of Lebanese abroad during the 1975-1990 civil war. –– Reuters
